2007 Melon VQA

Malivoire pioneered the introduction of Melon to Canada.  This is the same variety used for the highly popular Muscadet wines of France’s Loire valley.  Green apple and orange zest tempt your nose.  The hot, dry growing season of 2007 gave us a Melon that is creamier and less biting that its 2006 counterpart.  Even so, the characteristically elevated acidity of this wine presents a lemony fruitiness bursting with lime and blending to a soft, mineral finish.

Winemaker's Notes:
These grapes were harvested from the Winery's Estate vineyard on the Beamsville Bench September 10, 2007 at 19.0 degrees brix and 8.7 grams titratable acidity. Cool-fermented dry, with some lees contact, it was bottled young for full fruitiness.

In order to capture this wine's extreme youthfulness, it was minimally processed and may throw harmless tartrate crystals (wine diamonds) when chilled

Food Pairings:
For oysters, mussels and other shellfish, it’s Melon.

Recent Reviews:
“High class simplicity. Excellent aperitif wine that will be available in half bottles”. Billy Munnelly

"The Malivoire Melon de Bourgogne is fab with breaded freshwater fish dishes, but its soul mate is oysters. The crisp stoney aromas (limestone, rain splattered gravel) and citrusy flavour core (lemonpeel and lime)  carry just the right edge of acidity to glove with raw oysters, and the minerality fuses with the calcium flavours from the half shells. It is a true umami moment." Gordon Stimmell

"... To set a benchmark we were served first the wine that Martin Malivoire created specifically for oysters – Malivoire Melon 2007 (a  tart, mouth-puckering acidic, Muscadet-style white – perfect for oysters)." Tony Aspler

"His Melon 2007 (a Burgundy white varietal) was flawless with raw oysters which is why Starfish, Rodney's and Oyster Boy restaurants in Toronto serve this mineral-rich white with shellfish." Gord Stimmell (March-08)

"We opened with his 2007 Melon (88 points), a brisk, light white from the melon de bourgogne grape also grown in the Muscadet appellation at the mouth of France’s Loire River. This lovely, fruiter-than-muscadet but nifty mineral white worked splendidly with a New Brunswick mollusc called La Mallett. You will only find this small production wine—and small production oyster—at Toronto oyster shops like Rodney’s, Starfish and Oyster Boy. " David Lawrason (Mar-08)
